China’s Kaidi adds to biomass power plants

Chinese utility Kaidi Ecological and Environmental Technology has brought on line two dedicated biomass-fired power plants in east China's Anhui and northeast China's Jilin provinces.

The 30MW plant at Congjiang in Anhui started operations after finishing trial tests on 12 February. This followed the start of operations of its similar size biomass power plant at Huadian in Jilin. Huadian completed trial tests on 4 February. Another 30MW biomass boiler unit of an unspecified timeframe is being planned for Huadian.

Kaidi now operates 47 biomass power plants with a total installed capacity of 1,392MW. Its projects are focused on burning crop residue from nearby areas.

The utility's move is aligned with China's plan to encourage the use of biomass and other renewable energy sources, in place of coal for power and heat generation, in a bid to tackle air pollution. But authorities in February last year imposed an import ban on wood pellets for combustion purposes, in a bid to boost domestic biomass trade.

The Chinese government rolled out its 13th five-year plan at the end of 2016, highlighting a 15GW target for biomass-fired power generation capacity by 2020. But government agency the China national renewable energy centre later called for this target to be raised to 30GW by 2020 to meet China's commitments to the Paris climate agreement. The Paris agreement aims to limit the global temperature increase to below 2°C above pre-industrial levels.

The government has separately rolled out a plan to reduce the use of coal for winter residential heating by promoting the use of biomass and other cleaner energy sources in Beijing, Tianjin and 26 other cities in the northern provinces of Hebei, Shanxi, Henan and Shandong. But the plan had to be revised as regional electricity shortages this winter saw more coal-fired power generation allowed again for residential use.
